How to Get Hired for a Construction Job While Interviewing Remotely

A man in a plaid shirt and a man wearing a construction vest shake hands over a desk. Getting a job now looks different than it did before, even at the beginning of the year. As if you needed more problems when looking for work!

Many businesses have closed completely or reduced their staff, hours, and offerings. However, some industries have kept up workflow; some have even picked up. Construction has been deemed an essential service to build new and repair existing roads, bridges, airports, and more.

Ajax Paving is currently hiring, as are other construction companies. But how can you get a job with the current social distancing requirements? Keep reading for our tips on getting a construction job while interviewing remotely.

1. Test Your Computer and Tech

Check everything about your technology. Make sure the audio and your mic work. Make sure the application or program (such as Zoom, Skype, or Google Hangouts) you will use during your interview is downloaded and updated. If you are using your phone or laptop, make sure to charge the morning of the interview.

2. Dress to Impress

We get it, you are at home during the interview. Treat it the same way you would if you were going into an office for an interview. Dress professionally from top to bottom. Don’t let yourself become a horror story of getting caught wearing pajama pants and a dress shirt during the interview!

3. Get Rid of the Clutter and Distractions

If you are looking away from the interviewer, they will wonder why. Get rid of anything that might distract you during the interview. Use a quiet room where you can shut the door and no one will disturb you. Put your phone on silent unless you will use it for the interview.

4. Keep Your Resume at Your Side

Just like you would bring a copy of your resume with you to an interview, bring one to your remote interview. Print out a copy so you can refer to it and even show the interviewer. Then you can reference a part that they can look at with you! Use your resume as a talking point for your experience and qualifications.

5. Be Ready Ahead of Time

Not only should you dress the part, arrive early. Be in your quiet room, door closed, ready to go at least 15 minutes before the interview. Showing up early means a lot to an interviewer, especially when you will meet remotely.

6. Follow Up After the Interview

A thank you can go a long way. After the interview, email the interviewer and thank them for taking the time to interview you. Get some bonus points for bringing up specific points from the interview, such as any jokes or information they offered. Remember, set yourself apart from others.

Getting a Job Remotely

We aren’t going to sugar coat it, remote interviewers can be tough for your first time. Take a breath, relax, and show the interviewer your personality. Do some research, so you know who you are talking to, then just have a conversation with another human being. Ajax Paving prides itself on its strong team members. We are always on the lookout for experienced workers willing to learn.
