Ajax in Action
This project consisted of the in-place reconstruction of Runway and 4-22 and parallel Taxiway A at Peter O Knight Airport on Davis Island in Tampa. Other work consisted of the placement of airfield drainage and the reconstruction of multiple small taxiways and hangar areas. Approximately 90,000 SY of full-depth reclamation were constructed with 15,000 tons of P-401 asphalt. The project was phased to minimize impacts to the Airfield. Airfield electrical signage and airfield markings we also key elements of the Project. This project for the Charlotte County Airport Authority required the removal and replacement of Taxiway A. During the course of this six-month project, Ajax Paving laid a new, longer taxiway that exceeded requirements for pavement placement, density, and lab testing. Equally important, all tie-in construction was performed at night to ensure continued air service on the facility’s other runways. The Punta Gorda Airport project won a Quality in Construction Award from the National Asphalt Pavement Association and the Special Project Award from the Asphalt Contractors Association of Florida. Working with Cone & Graham, Inc. and Kimmins Contracting Corp., Ajax Paving rebuilt the parkway underneath, the main entrance and exit to Tampa International Airport. We also improved the roadways on the southern parts of the airport to connect the main building with long term parking and the new car rental structure.
