HIGH TECH, HIGH PRODUCTION, AND EVEN HIGHER STANDARDS.

Upon entering Plant 5, past the monument-quality corporate sign and abundant landscaping, you may not realize that you’re entering Ajax’s highest producing hot mix asphalt (HMA) facility — and one of the highest output facilities in the nation. Completed in the spring of 2008, and strategically located amid many major Detroit-area construction projects, Plant 5 uses the most advanced technologies available. But these technologies are not only designed to increase production. Plant 5 was planned as a model for green manufacturing, showing that greater efficiencies would allow increased production while lowering our impact on the world and the community around us.

EFFICIENCY THROUGH TECHNOLOGY

Plant 5’s mixer drum, baghouse, and plant controls are the very latest in asphalt manufacturing technology. Our Gencor Industries mixer drum at the heart of the facility incorporates “Advanced RAP Entry,” allowing recycled asphalt pavement (RAP) to be preheated before entering the mixing zone. This technology delivers an approximately 8 percent fuel savings over other drum designs and helps make Plant 5 the most efficient of all Ajax plants. In addition, the drum’s burner features a high-efficiency, dual-fuel design that can operate on Recycled Used Oil (RUO), natural gas, or any combination of the two.

The baghouse at Plant 5 features 1,520 DuPont Nomex® filters — each 14 feet by 10 inches in diameter — to virtually eliminate dust. And by using Reverse Air Technology, Ajax was able to eliminate the need for a large air compressor along with the electricity required to operate one.

Plant 5 also incorporates the latest computer technology. The “brain” of the facility incorporates PAC (Programmed Automation Controller)-based process controls — the latest in Programmable Logic Controller software. The system is network-integrated to monitor the plant’s equipment, diagnose any problems, and help avoid failures. And to ensure safe and continuous production, a redundant system protects against hardware and software failures. This includes a duplicate hard drive on each computer and a complete and current backup system.

MAXIMUM PRODUCTION

Ajax takes on some of the biggest, most demanding jobs in the industry, and Plant 5 helps maximize our ability to complete those jobs on time and on budget. Our 12’ 9” diameter, 60’ long Gencor Industries mixer drum increased our throughput capacity from 500 tons per hour to 700 tons per hour while raising energy efficiencies and lowering emissions. Only a handful of plants in the entire industry are able to produce at this level.

EARTH- AND COMMUNITY-FRIENDLY

Earth- and community-friendly Plant 5 was designed to not only satisfy the production needs of our biggest jobs, but also to show our commitment to leading the way in green technology. Modern, high-efficiency machinery helps reduce the energy used in the production process. Advanced filtering equipment produces an air stream that is 99.9 percent particulate-free so that only water vapor rises from the stack. And our ability to fuel our burner with any combination of Recycled Used Oil and natural gas puts Ajax on the cutting edge of green manufacturing.

And though we are dedicated to protecting the global environment we all share, we never lose sight of the community that surrounds us. That’s why Ajax dedicated nearly $50,000 to creating a pleasing landscape around and throughout this ultra-modern facility. It’s also why we invested in a burner that projects only 70 decibels at 20 feet during operation. That’s roughly the equivalent of a quiet vacuum cleaner — a surprising sound for one of the highest-producing facility in the industry.
