Longevity with Integrity
Ajax Receives Award for High Ethical Standards

By Zachary Settle

The Detroit Chapter of the National Association of Women in Construction (NAWIC), founded on October 16, 1971, as one of nearly 200 chapters, held its annual awards dinner on June 22, 2005. Among the awards given at the 10th Annual Construction Industry Night awards event was the Longevity with Integrity award. As one of three nominees in the Contractor/Subcontractor category for this award, Ajax Paving Industries, Inc., came out on top. Also nominated in the category were Spartan Specialties, Ltd., and Future Fence Company.

The Longevity with Integrity award is given each year to one company in each of the three categories. The other two categories for the award are Architect/Engineer and Material/Equipment. According to the National Asphalt Paving Association, the company receiving the award “continues to provide service to their clients in the construction industry and demonstrates as a company their commitment to doing business with high ethical standards, including fairness, honesty, and integrity.”

Donielle Wunderlich, Director of NAWIC, nominated Ajax for the award after noticing the female-friendly environment on an Ajax jobsite she drove by each day. “I saw women actually doing work, not just holding stop signs or flags,” she says.

The award recognizes a company that has been in the construction industry for more than 20 years and enhances the success of women in the industry by upholding high-principled business values.

Factors that single out a winner include major accomplishments, memberships and affiliations, contributions, honors and awards, and support for NAWIC’s principles within the industry.

A special plaque was presented to Ajax during the event at Meadowbrook Country Club in Northville, Michigan. The award expresses NAWIC’s thanks to Ajax for remaining dedicated to helping expand the roles of women in the industry.

“Ajax’s success is primarily based on its people,” said Dale Kaszeta-Mein, Ajax’s Payroll/HR Administrator, during the acceptance speech. “The people of Ajax work as a team regardless of sex, race, color, religion, national origin, age, handicap, height, or weight.”
